Women’s voices rose in Bornova through events ranging from exhibitions and theater to talks and solidarity

Bornova Belediyesi organized a week-long program filled with art, culture, and solidarity events as part of International Women's Day. Through activities ranging from photo exhibitions to theater performances, the life stories, struggles, and spirit of solidarity of women were made visible through art in various cultural centers across Bornova.

Within the program, the photo exhibition “Our Story: Women’s Stories of Bornova”, the theater play “Havva – This Story Will Change”, and the play “Can Kırıkları” staged with the support of Çağdaş Yaşamı Destekleme Derneği İzmir Branch were presented to art lovers.

Women’s stories of Bornova met in a photo exhibition

As part of the March 8 events, the photo exhibition “Our Story: Women’s Stories of Bornova” opened at Uğur Mumcu Kültür ve Sanat Merkezi. The exhibition presented photographs focusing on the lives, labor, and production of women living in Bornova.

The exhibition, which can be visited until March 18, tells the stories of women from different ages and professions through photographs.

“Havva – This Story Will Change”

Another event staged during the March 8 program was the theater play “Havva – This Story Will Change.” The play was performed at the Nedret Güvenç Stage in Çamdibi and attracted great interest from theater enthusiasts.

Written and performed by Sinem Koşar and directed by Arif M. Güney, the one-woman play tells the story of a woman striving to build her own life against the norms imposed by society. The play was inspired by the short story “Havva” by Vüs’at O. Bener and characters from the novel “Son Bakış” by Irmak Zileli.

Bringing women’s struggles for life to the stage with themes of hope and resistance, the play received long applause from the audience.

“We Are All in the Play”: Can Kırıkları

As part of the March 8 events, Altındağ Atatürk Kültür Merkezi STK Campus also hosted an important theater performance. The play “Can Kırıkları,” staged with the support of the Çağdaş Yaşamı Destekleme Derneği İzmir Branch under the slogan “We Are All in the Play,” met with the audience.

The play, which portrayed women’s life struggles and social inequalities, offered viewers both emotional and thought-provoking moments.

Mayor Eşki: “We will fight together for an equal future”

Ömer Eşki emphasized that the March 8 events are not only a celebration but also a call for social awareness. Highlighting the contributions of women in every field of social life, he said:

“A society where women live equally, freely, and safely is the responsibility of all of us. As Bornova Municipality, we continue our efforts to strengthen women’s presence in social, cultural, and economic life. These events are part of the struggle for solidarity and equality. Women’s stories are also the story of society itself. In Bornova, the voice of equality, solidarity, and freedom will continue to rise through art, culture, and collective action.”
