Healthy Nutrition Training for Women Producing in Urban Gardens

Bornova Municipality organized healthy nutrition and food safety training sessions for women benefiting from the Pınarbaşı Urban Garden. Held in cooperation with the Tohumluk Foundation and Ege University, the trainings focused on proper food storage and the importance of nutrition in women’s health. Mayor Ömer Eşki emphasized that the Urban Gardens are an important model of solidarity that empowers women through production.

Bornova Municipality conducted a training program on healthy nutrition and food safety for women using the Pınarbaşı Urban Garden. The trainings, held at the Pınarbaşı Cultural Center in cooperation with the Tohumluk Foundation and the Department of Food Engineering at Ege University, attracted great interest.

Experts Discuss Food Safety and Women’s Health

During the program, practical recommendations were shared on healthy eating habits that women can apply both in the production process and in their daily home lives, as well as on proper storage conditions for food products.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahsem Rahman Ergün from Ege University’s Department of Food Engineering provided information on proper storage methods and food safety under the title “Preservation Methods for Fruits and Vegetables.”

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şebnem Şimşek, in her presentation titled “The Importance of Nutrition in Women’s Health,” highlighted the critical role of healthy nutrition in women’s lives.

Urban Gardens Are Expanding, Women’s Solidarity Is Growing

Bornova Municipality’s Urban Gardens, an agricultural solidarity and production model, were significantly expanded in 2025. The project, which started in Pınarbaşı, has spread to seven different locations across the district. While the number of women benefiting from the urban gardens has reached 500, efforts continue to establish new garden areas.

Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki underlined that the Urban Gardens, where women play an active role in production, are not only an agricultural initiative but also a social transformation project, stating:
