Ümit Özdağ, Chairman of the Zafer Partisi (Victory Party), visited Abide-i Hürriyet Meydanı, which was developed by Bornova Belediyesi in the Kazım Dirik Neighborhood, during his visit to İzmir as part of a series of programs. During the visit, accompanied by Ömer Eşki, information was provided about the square, which references the Turkic world and the 31 Mart Vakası. Özdağ stated that he liked the square very much and thanked Mayor Eşki.

Mayor Ömer Eşki accompanied Özdağ during the visit and provided details about the square. He explained that the area was designed as a memorial space referring to the 31 March Incident, one of the important turning points in Turkish political history, and to the struggle for freedom.

Opening held with İlber Ortaylı

Mayor Eşki recalled that the square was inaugurated on April 27, 2025, with the participation of renowned historian İlber Ortaylı, who passed away recently. He stated that the project aims to keep historical memory alive.

After touring the square, Ümit Özdağ said he greatly appreciated the project and that he was very pleased to see such a place. He emphasized that initiatives that strengthen historical awareness are important and thanked Mayor Ömer Eşki.

The visit was also attended by Sinan Bezircilioğlu, İzmir Provincial Chairman of the Victory Party, Birgül Etiz Özeken, District Chairwoman, and party members.

A square that keeps historical memory alive

Opened last year by Bornova Belediyesi, Abide-i Hürriyet Meydanı was designed inspired by the Abide-i Hürriyet Anıtı, one of the symbols of the constitutional and freedom movements during the Ottoman period.

The square includes symbolic elements referring to the Turkic world and the struggle for freedom. The area serves both as a public space that strengthens historical awareness and as a new meeting point for the residents of Bornova.
