Awareness in Bornova Earned a Standing Ovation

Bornova Municipality concluded its events for International Disability Awareness Week with the “Dance for Awareness” event. Held at the Ayfer Feray Open-Air Theater in Büyükpark, the heart of Bornova, the performances—especially wheelchair dance routines—offered deeply emotional moments for the audience. The event served as a powerful reminder that art remains one of the strongest means of uniting people and raising awareness.

Disability Awareness Week Celebrated with Hope, Courage, and Art

The event opened with a performance of the song “Yollarda Bulurum” by young musician Efe Ersoy. This was followed by a Zeybek folk dance to the tune of “Kerimoğlu,” performed by Zeynep Türk and Kerem Üzülmez, which received high praise from the audience. The evening culminated with a performance by the dancers of the Wheelchair Dance Project. Every act was met with prolonged standing ovations.

Bornova Deputy Mayor Cemal Hocaoğlu also attended the event, sharing in the excitement of the young performers along with their families and fellow Bornova residents. The inclusive nature of art once again made itself felt through this meaningful gathering.

Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki emphasized that the event represented not just dance, but a strong stance, stating:

“We were once again reminded that barriers are not in the body, but in the mind. This city is more beautiful and stronger because of its diversity. The Wheelchair Dance Project is a prime example of how art can be made accessible and transformative for all. Art is the strongest voice that breaks all molds, and we will continue to amplify that voice in Bornova.”

Mayor Eşki also highlighted that their approach to social municipalism is rooted in a commitment to overcoming obstacles together:

“Our efforts are not limited to just one week—we work with this awareness every single day of the year.”

The Inspiring Story of the Wheelchair Dance Project

Founded in 2013 under the leadership of İzmir State Opera and Ballet artist Banu Dağcıoğlu Türkeli, the Wheelchair Dance Project was launched with the support of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality. Comprising dancers with physical disabilities, the group operates entirely with volunteer instructors and musicians. The project continues to be a powerful example of the inclusivity of art and the strength of solidarity.
