The Invisible Burden of Motherhood Discussed in Bornova

2 June 2026

“Invisible Responsibilities, Social Pressures, and the Search for Balance”

The panel titled “The Glass Ceiling of Motherhood,” organized through a collaboration between Bornova Municipality and Medicana Health Group, brought attention to the often unseen yet deeply impactful social burdens carried by women. Held at the Yeşilova Mound Visitor Center, the event featured expert speakers who emphasized that motherhood is not only a personal experience but also a complex process shaped by social expectations, career pressures, and emotional responsibilities.

The Pressure of Being the “Perfect Mother”

Speaking at the panel, which was organized by the Bornova Municipality Health Affairs Directorate, Dr. Müge Yaşar, Associate Professor of Psychiatry, stated that women in the modern world are placed under intense pressure by the expectation of being the “perfect mother.” She noted that women often put their own needs aside and highlighted how social media and societal norms create an invisible performance pressure.

Dr. Yaşar explained that trying to simultaneously meet the demands of parenting, professional life, social relationships, and family responsibilities places a significant psychological burden on women.

Women Often Put Their Own Health Last

Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist Dr. İlkay N. Topaloğlu emphasized that women’s health should not be evaluated solely through physical processes and drew attention to the impact of increasing social responsibilities on women’s overall well-being.

Topaloğlu stated that women frequently postpone their own health needs, adopting a “everyone else comes first” mindset. She stressed the importance of supporting women both physically and emotionally.

The Struggle to “Do It All”

Throughout the event, speakers discussed the less visible aspects of motherhood, the expectations women face in everyday life, and the pressure created by the need to “do it all.” Participants noted that defining women primarily through their identity as mothers can restrict their personal space and emphasized the importance of preserving individual identity alongside motherhood.

Emphasis on Solidarity and Awareness

The panel attracted considerable interest from attendees. At the conclusion of the event, the experts highlighted the need to expand social support networks that help women feel they are not alone. They also emphasized that gatherings like this play an important role in raising public awareness and fostering social solidarity.
