Aesthetic Transformation Begins in the Historic Bazaar

Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki inspected the ongoing urban design and infrastructure improvement works in the Historic Bazaar and Mansions District. He stated that once completed, the project will give the town center an attractive and aesthetically pleasing appearance that will draw visitors from across the city. The project aims to transform the area into a new destination by renewing pavements, sidewalks, and lighting systems, while creating visual harmony through standardized signage and covered roofing applications.

Mayor Eşki visited the Historic Bazaar area, which is also home to the recently opened Gülşah Durbay Youth Center, accompanied by municipal officials and department heads. During the visit, he closely reviewed the ongoing restoration, infrastructure, and landscaping works and shared details about projects that will help make Bornova one of İzmir’s most attractive urban centers.

Infrastructure Completed, More Comfortable Days Ahead

Recalling the difficulties experienced by local businesses and residents during the infrastructure and excavation works previously carried out by İZSU, Mayor Eşki noted that this challenging period has now come to an end. With the completion of infrastructure works, Bornova Municipality has launched a comprehensive urban renewal initiative that will significantly improve the appearance of the district.

Emphasizing that the difficult days are now behind them, Eşki thanked both local shopkeepers and residents for their patience throughout the process.

Visual Harmony Through Standardized Signage and a Covered Bazaar Concept

Mayor Eşki explained that the project seeks to preserve Bornova’s historical character while enhancing modern urban aesthetics. He stated that one of the key components of the transformation is creating visual consistency throughout the area.

As part of the project, paving materials, lighting systems, sidewalks, and medians will be redesigned according to a unified concept. To reduce visual clutter, all businesses will adopt standardized signage. Eşki also announced plans to fully cover the Historic Bazaar, transforming it into a protected and aesthetically appealing shopping destination.

A New Touch for the Historic Mansions District

The project will extend beyond the bazaar itself, covering the area known as the Mansions District, including 80th Street opposite Ege University Rectorate, the route leading to Republic Square, and the connected side streets. All stone surfaces and sidewalks in these areas will be renewed using carefully selected materials that reflect Bornova’s unique identity and historical heritage.

Mayor Ömer Eşki stated that the extensive works being carried out throughout the district are beginning to produce visible results in terms of urban aesthetics.
