The End of Motorcycle Traffic in Bornova’s Parks
Bornova’s Parks Welcome Pedestrians and People with Disabilities, but Keep Motorcycles Out
Bornova Municipality has launched a groundbreaking initiative to prevent motorcycles from entering heavily frequented parks and endangering pedestrian safety. Thanks to a specially designed barrier system installed at park entrances, baby strollers, shopping trolleys, and wheelchairs can pass through easily, while motorcycles can no longer enter.
Explaining the initiative on site, Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki said: “Our parks are open to pedestrians, and motorcycle entry is prohibited. However, some riders who want to reach their destinations quickly use these areas as shortcuts. This creates dangerous situations for children playing in the parks and other pedestrians who come here to relax. With the barrier system we have introduced at Büyükpark, we aim to prevent motorcycles from entering the park and protect our children.”
Continuing its efforts to improve urban quality of life and make public spaces safer, Bornova Municipality has introduced a lasting solution to one of the most common complaints among residents. Specially designed metal railing systems have been installed to prevent motorcycles from entering parks without authorization and putting pedestrian safety at risk, particularly in areas where children, young people, and families spend time in peace.
Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki personally inspected the innovative barrier system, first installed at all entrances to Büyükpark, the heart of the district. Thanks to its accessible design, the system allows parents with baby strollers and residents with disabilities who use wheelchairs to pass through without difficulty, while preventing motorcycles from entering quickly and without control.
First Büyükpark, Then All of Bornova
Mayor Ömer Eşki announced that the initiative, launched at Büyükpark, would soon be expanded to green spaces throughout Bornova. Addressing residents, he said:
“As you know, children, young people, and older residents come to Büyükpark to enjoy their time in safety and comfort. However, the constant entry of motorcycles into the park and the danger they pose to people walking here have been causing serious concern. We have introduced this special barrier system to put an end to this entirely justified concern among our residents.
“Wheelchairs and baby strollers can pass through these barriers with ease. However, motorcycles cannot get through them and must significantly reduce their speed and slow down. This will make our parks much safer by keeping them free of motorcycles.
“We launched the initiative at Büyükpark. Next, we will bring it to Çamdibi Atatürk Park, followed by Kandere Park in Serintepe. We will extend this protective system to every location where it is needed, so that our residents can feel safer throughout these areas. Everything we do is for a more livable Bornova with a higher quality of life.”
Pedestrians’ Peace of Mind, Protected
The new system aims to prevent accidents inside parks, allowing Bornova residents to let their children run and play without worry. Bornova Municipality will continue implementing the project until walking paths, children’s playgrounds, and recreational areas throughout the district are made safer.
