Mayor Eşki: “Environmentally Conscious Technologies Will Be Used”

At its June Municipal Council Meeting, the Bornova Municipality approved the establishment of a technologically advanced facility in the Karaçam neighborhood for the recovery of excavation soil and construction debris. Mayor Ömer Eşki emphasized the importance of minimizing the environmental impact of the facility through rigorous scientific processes. Additionally, the council decided to name a park in Kazım Dirik Neighborhood as “July 2nd Memorial and Justice Park” and approved sister city agreements with Prizren (Kosovo) and Beylikova (Eskişehir).

The June Ordinary Meeting of the Bornova Municipal Council was held at the Nevzat Kavalar Cultural Center Assembly Hall under the leadership of Mayor Ömer Eşki. Several key decisions were made during the session.

A Strategic Move for Urban Transformation

The council approved the leasing of a 25,000-square-meter area owned by the municipality in Karaçam for the establishment of a “Soil Excavation, Construction and Demolition Waste Recovery Facility.” Commenting on the project, Mayor Eşki stated:
“We all wish to see more parks, sports fields, and swimming pools everywhere. However, Bornova needs such a service facility. Earthquake preparedness is a critical reality, and urban transformation is an absolute necessity. There’s no part of Bornova we can label as more or less valuable for this purpose.”

Mayor Eşki also underlined that all environmental aspects of the project have been evaluated meticulously:
“All questions submitted to İZSU (İzmir Water and Sewerage Administration) were forwarded to the Institute of High Technology. Our technical teams responded thoroughly to every inquiry. This will be the first facility in Turkey to use certain technologies. I do not want residents of the area to say, ‘You left us in dust and debris.’ Every technological detail has been considered to reduce side effects as much as possible.”

“July 2nd Memorial and Justice Park” Named

Following a proposal by CHP council members, the park located at the intersection of Ord. Prof. Dr. Muhiddin Erel Street and 372nd Street in Kazım Dirik Neighborhood will now be named “July 2nd Memorial and Justice Park.” The decision passed with majority support.

Deputy Mayor Cem Arıkan, who submitted the proposal, reminded attendees that the statute of limitations had expired in the Madımak Trial, where 33 people lost their lives in the Sivas Massacre. “The pain of this tragedy will never fade from our collective conscience. I thank all council members who listened to their conscience,” Arıkan said. Mayor Eşki added, “I hope such tragedies will never happen again.”

New Sister Cities for Bornova

The council also unanimously approved proposals to establish sister city relations with Prizren in Kosovo and Beylikova in Eskişehir.
