Olive Harvest Begins on 1,500 Trees in Bornova

1 December 2025

Mayor Eşki: “The abundance of our city grows when we share it”

Bornova Municipality has begun the olive harvest on 1,500 olive trees across the district, and the olive oil produced will be delivered to those in need through Kent Market. In addition, a training program organized in cooperation with the Chamber of Food Engineers at Dramalılar Köşkü provided participants with information on olive oil quality, sensory analysis, and aromatic characteristics.

To be delivered to those in need through Kent Market

Municipal teams have started harvesting olives from the 1,500 trees located in parks, gardens, and recreational areas under the municipality’s responsibility. The olive oil obtained from Bornova’s fertile olive trees will be offered free of charge to residents in need via Kent Market shelves once the production process is completed.

Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki emphasized that the olive harvest is a strong example of the district’s culture of solidarity:
“As we protect Bornova’s soil, trees, and natural resources, we also value sharing what we produce with our residents. The olive oil we obtain from our 1,500 olive trees will become an important part of our social support programs. Through Kent Markets, we work to ensure that no household is left without essentials.”

Olive oil tasting training highlights conscious consumption and quality

Parallel to the harvest season, Bornova Municipality organized an “Olive Oil Tasting Training” in cooperation with the İzmir Branch of the Chamber of Food Engineers. The training, held at Dramalılar Köşkü, was conducted by Food Engineer İnci Özer.

Participants received in-depth information on topics such as:

  • Quality criteria in olive oil

  • Sensory analysis methods

  • Aromatic and sensory properties of olive oil

  • Identifying defects in olive oil

Mayor Ömer Eşki noted that the training was not merely a tasting event but also a public education initiative aimed at encouraging informed consumption:
“We want the people of Bornova to understand quality both in production and consumption. Having knowledge about a product like olive oil—which carries both cultural and economic significance—strengthens our support for local production.”
