İZSU completes infrastructure work, Bornova Municipality renews the superstructure

As İZSU’s infrastructure renewal works near completion on Mustafa Kemal Street—one of Bornova’s busiest roads—the Bornova Municipality has started superstructure improvements. Mayor Ömer Eşki announced that the street’s renovation will be completed before schools reopen.

Mustafa Kemal Street, one of the city’s most important arteries, is undergoing a major transformation. While İZSU is finalizing the infrastructure works, Bornova Municipality’s Directorate of Technical Works teams are working intensively to reopen the street to traffic.

Following the infrastructure renewal, the teams began road scraping before asphalt paving, a process that Mayor Ömer Eşki personally inspected. Heads of relevant departments also accompanied the visit. Mayor Eşki pointed out the collapses caused by the aging infrastructure.

Mayor Eşki: “A 50–60-year-old infrastructure problem is being solved at its root”

Speaking during the on-site inspection, Mayor Eşki said:

“We are now in the heart of Bornova, on Mustafa Kemal Street. İZSU has carried out infrastructure works here, and we have undertaken the superstructure phase. We aim to create a street worthy of Bornova, with landscaping and modern lighting. This area had very old sidewalks that would shift frequently, splashing water onto pedestrians during rain. Our citizens want us to move fast, but the infrastructure here is extremely old—dating back 50–60 years—and that’s why frequent collapses occur. Right now, we are showing you a collapse incident we encountered in the very center of Bornova. These issues arise because the ground beneath the road is hollow. Although unforeseen situations occur, our teams are working with great dedication. Before the schools open, we will deliver Mustafa Kemal Street to our citizens—complete with landscaping, medians, modern lighting, and without the old iron railings—truly befitting Bornova.”

A modernization move for the street

Once completed, Mustafa Kemal Street will feature modern lighting, organized medians, accessible sidewalks for people with disabilities, and aesthetic landscaping—making it one of Bornova’s most comfortable roads.
