Bornova celebrated October 19 Muhtar’s Day with a ceremony held at Cumhuriyet Square. Muhtars (neighborhood heads) laid a wreath at the Atatürk Monument, while Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki emphasized that muhtars are the cornerstone of democracy. The municipality also organized a folk dance training program starting with the zeybek dance, strengthening cultural solidarity among local leaders.

The official ceremony brought together Bornova’s muhtars and protocol members at Cumhuriyet Square, where they honored Atatürk with a wreath. Speaking on behalf of the muhtars, Bornova Muhtars Association President and Çiçekli Neighborhood Muhtar Zeki Güler highlighted the deep-rooted importance of the institution, saying:

“The muhtarlık is a vital institution that stands with citizens from birth to death. We are the first bridge between the people and the public administration.”

Eşki: “The voice of our neighborhoods, the safeguard of our democracy”

Mayor Ömer Eşki underscored that muhtars are an indispensable part of local governance, stating:

“Our muhtars are the backbone of democracy. They are the closest representatives who directly convey the people’s voice to us. In Bornova, we will continue to ensure that neighborhood voices are part of the decision-making process. Together, we are building a stronger, more participatory Bornova.”

Folk dance surprise for muhtars

To provide a morale boost amid their busy schedules, Bornova Municipality organized a folk dance training program for muhtars. Both male and female muhtars participated enthusiastically, beginning with traditional zeybek dances. After completing the training, muhtars are expected to perform at official ceremonies.

Mayor Eşki added:

“Our muhtars represent the vibrant face of Bornova—not only in service but also in cultural life. We keep solidarity, friendship, and cultural values alive together.”
