A meaningful handover on April 23

In Bornova, Mayor Ömer Eşki symbolically handed over his seat to two students during April 23 celebrations, emphasizing his trust in children and his goal of shaping the future for them. The children delivered a meaningful message by expressing Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s famous quote, “Peace at Home, Peace in the World,” in both Turkish and English. National Sovereignty and Children’s Day was celebrated with enthusiasm through official ceremonies and school events.

April 23 National Sovereignty and Children’s Day in Bornova was marked by children’s joy and hopeful messages. One of the most remarkable moments of the day was when Mayor Ömer Eşki symbolically transferred his office to two students.

Second-grade, 8-year-old Esmer Alya Erdağ and third-grade, 9-year-old Arel Çalışkan sat in the mayor’s chair and voiced the message “Peace at Home, Peace in the World” in both Turkish and English. The children also thanked Mustafa Kemal Atatürk for dedicating this special day to the children of the world.

Mayor Eşki: “We shape the future according to our children”
In his speech, Mayor Ömer Eşki emphasized that children are the guarantee of the future:
“Today is April 23, a day we also celebrated with great excitement in our childhood. We shared our office with two wonderful children. Our aim is to leave a better world for children, and we plan all our work accordingly. If we can build a world free from violence and full of dialogue, we will actually improve our own lives as well.”

Official ceremony at Cumhuriyet Square
The celebrations began with an official ceremony at Bornova Cumhuriyet Square. Bornova District Governor Muzaffer Şahiner, Garrison Commander Brigadier General Tarık Demirci, and district officials attended the ceremony, where a wreath was laid at the Atatürk Monument. Following a moment of silence and the National Anthem, students presented performances reflecting the significance of the day.

Celebrations continued with performances and awards
The events continued at Fatih Sultan Mehmet Primary School, where students’ dance and stage performances received great applause. Awards were presented to students who ranked in competitions organized as part of the program.
