“Sharing Is Essential for Sustainable Municipal Governance”

Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki, who participated in the workshop titled “Rights-Based Governance and Labor Relations in Local Governments” organized by SODEMSEN, emphasized the importance of sustainable municipal governance. Highlighting SODEMSEN’s inclusive approach, Eşki stated that this stance is crucial for the economic sustainability of local governments and that all municipalities must take an active role within this structure.

The workshop, organized by the Social Democratic Public Employers’ Union (SODEMSEN), took place at the İzmir Innovation Center (İZQ). Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki, a member of the SODEMSEN Executive Board, attended the event.

“I’ve been on both sides of the table”

Speaking at the opening session—also attended by İzmir Metropolitan Mayor Cemil Tugay—Mayor Ömer Eşki underlined the importance of SODEMSEN based on his own experience:
“As you know, intensive negotiations take place periodically between unions and SODEMSEN. I previously served as a branch president in civil servant unions; in other words, I have been on both sides of the table. That’s why I understand very well how important SODEMSEN is,” he said.

“Balanced governance is essential for sustainability”

Emphasizing sustainable governance in his remarks, Mayor Eşki continued:
“Sustainability is one of the most important issues of our time. Without SODEMSEN’s inclusive and balanced approach, it would not be possible for municipalities to produce economically sustainable policies. When you are on the employer’s side, you sometimes have to say ‘no,’ because you must safeguard the lifespan and financial stability of the municipality.”

“All municipalities must participate in the process”

Stressing the need for SODEMSEN to evolve into an even stronger structure, Eşki added:
“To succeed, there must be much more sharing under its umbrella, and all municipalities must actively participate in this process. We are truly grateful for the work they do. Their presence is extremely valuable to us.”
