The mansion built by John Maltass was inherited by his daughter Eugenie Wood. Mrs. Wood, who was the wife of Dr. Charles Wood, had eight children, and after the death of this couple, two of the eight children, Lucy and Hortense, continued to live in the mansion... Lucy was an artist. She was a painter and also took piano lessons from the world-famous composer of the Hungarian Rhapsody, Franz Lizst... Hortense was a great fan of Mustafa Kemal. She wrote letters to him congratulating him on his successes... Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who came to Bornova during the liberation of İzmir on September 9, 1922, learned the location of the mansion where Hortense Wood lived and was a guest of Hortense Wood in the Mattheys mansion with İsmet İnönü, Fevzi Çakmak and Halide Edip Adıvar. Later, the mansion was purchased by Arkas Holding and became the Arkas Carpet Museum in 2023.
