Expropriation and Demolition Work Continue Simultaneously in Serintepe

Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki inspected on site the ongoing works launched to resolve the chronic traffic and infrastructure problems in Serintepe Neighborhood (Kandere). The project, carried out jointly by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality and Bornova Municipality, is progressing on two fronts: expropriation procedures are continuing meticulously, while buildings for which agreements have been reached are being demolished rapidly. Mayor Eşki said, “We are taking determined steps to eliminate this bottleneck. Serintepe and Altındağ will soon have the comfort and safe infrastructure they deserve.”

Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki continued his neighborhood visits in the Altındağ area with a visit to Serintepe Neighborhood, aiming to identify local needs on site and listen directly to residents’ concerns. Mayor Eşki was accompanied by the relevant deputy mayors, municipal department heads, and Serintepe Neighborhood Headman Latif Tek.

Expropriation and Demolition Work Proceed in Parallel

The main focus of Mayor Eşki’s visit was the transportation corridor in front of Yunus Emre Mosque, which he had previously inspected together with İzmir Metropolitan Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay.

Expropriation efforts carried out jointly by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality and Bornova Municipality are continuing at full speed to widen the road connecting Streets 5701 and 4310, whose width narrows to as little as two meters at certain points. Following more than 1.5 years of legal proceedings, court processes, and negotiations with property owners, the demolition of buildings expropriated in stages is now being carried out simultaneously.

A Critical Route for Kemalpaşa Avenue and the Onat Tunnel

Inspecting the demolition works on site and emphasizing the project's strategic importance for the area, Mayor Ömer Eşki said:

“Today we are in our Serintepe Neighborhood, also known as Kandere. Next to Yunus Emre Mosque, there was a very narrow section of road used for both directions, with its width narrowing to as little as two meters in some places. This is one of the most important alternatives to Kemalpaşa Avenue, which is heavily used by buses and trucks. Moreover, in the future, it will form part of the main route connecting Altındağ to Bornova via the Onat Tunnel.

The 1.5-year process of legal proceedings, negotiations, and coordination that we have carried out together with the Metropolitan Municipality is now bearing fruit. While our expropriation efforts continue without interruption, we have begun demolitions in the areas where the procedures have been completed. We still have some work to do, and the process is progressing step by step. But once it is completed, we will create a modern corridor with at least one lane in each direction and proper sidewalks, which will significantly ease traffic in Altındağ and Serintepe.”

Chronic Flooding to Be Eliminated

Emphasizing that the project is more than simply a road-widening initiative, Mayor Eşki said they are also tackling the area's long-standing infrastructure problems.

He explained that there are inaccessible sections beneath some of the buildings that have been demolished or are currently undergoing expropriation, preventing İZSU from previously intervening in the infrastructure network.

“We can now access the pipelines located beneath these buildings. Once the necessary infrastructure works are completed, we will completely eliminate the chronic flooding in this area. We will provide our neighborhood with the relief, spaciousness, and comfort it deserves.”

Mayor Eşki Meets Residents Over Tea

Following his field inspection, Mayor Ömer Eşki visited Kandere Park and the local market area, greeting shopkeepers and residents one by one and listening to their requests.

He concluded his visit at the neighborhood coffeehouse, where he had a friendly conversation with residents over tea. Eşki shared information about Bornova Municipality’s vision projects and planned investments in the neighborhood, emphasizing that they would continue improving Bornova street by street through a participatory approach to local government.
