Summer Season Begins in the Urban Gardens

At Bornova Municipality’s Evka-4 Urban Garden, women producers have begun preparations for the summer season by planting seeds obtained from the municipality’s local seed gardens. They also received training on seed planting and germination processes. Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki emphasized that women’s labor and the preservation of local seeds strengthen both household economies and community solidarity.

Women benefiting from the Evka-4 Urban Garden planted local varieties of tomato, pepper, and eggplant seeds sourced from Bornova Municipality’s local seed gardens. They were provided with practical training on seed sowing and germination to ensure that production continues in a conscious and efficient manner.

Number of Urban Gardens to Increase to Seven; More Women Producers Join

Following the Urban Gardens in Pınarbaşı, Altındağ, Mevlana, Işıkkent, Rafetpaşa, and Evka-4 neighborhoods, the district’s largest Urban Garden will open in Doğanlar. With this addition, the total number of Urban Gardens will rise to seven.

The number of women participating in production will increase significantly from 481 to 741.

Women cultivate their own seedlings on plots allocated free of charge, growing healthy and natural products that contribute to their household budgets while strengthening the culture of solidarity within their neighborhoods.

Mayor Ömer Eşki underlined that Urban Gardens are not merely agricultural production areas:

“Women’s participation in production makes a significant contribution both to family budgets and to social solidarity. By preserving our local seeds, we increase access to healthy food and establish a sustainable production model in the city. Every woman who touches the soil is, in fact, sowing hope for Bornova’s future.”
