Summer Season Begins with Enthusiasm in Urban Gardens

Bornova Municipality has kicked off the 2026 summer season with planting activities in its urban gardens. Tomato, pepper, and eggplant seedlings, along with cowpea seeds, have been planted in the Altındağ, Işıkkent, Mevlana, and Pınarbaşı urban gardens. As the number of these gardens increases, Mayor Ömer Eşki emphasized their goal of establishing an urban garden in every neighborhood. These gardens not only support household economies but also strengthen social solidarity.

Bornova Municipality welcomed the summer season with planting activities carried out in 25-square-meter plots across the urban gardens. Both paste and table tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, and eggplant seedlings were planted, alongside cowpea seeds. These spaces, which offer production opportunities in harmony with nature, have also become important hubs of social interaction—especially with the strong participation of women.

Mayor Eşki: “Production in every neighborhood, abundance in every home”

Mayor Ömer Eşki personally took part in the planting event, supporting the process alongside residents. Highlighting the significant contribution of women, he stated:
“These gardens are not just places where vegetables are grown; they are symbols of solidarity, sharing, and production. Our goal is to ensure that every neighborhood in Bornova has its own garden. We aim to expand these areas so every citizen can connect with the soil and produce their own food. By growing our urban gardens, we will build a stronger Bornova both economically and socially.”

Production opportunities for thousands

Urban gardens in Bornova provide production space for hundreds of residents across different neighborhoods. Plot distribution is as follows:

• Altındağ Urban Garden: 53 plots
• Işıkkent Urban Garden: 65 plots
• Mevlana Urban Garden: 76 plots
• Pınarbaşı Urban Garden: 49 plots
• Rafetpaşa Urban Garden: 17 plots
• Evka-4 Urban Garden: 244 plots

Additionally, the planned Doğanlar Urban Garden will further expand capacity with 265 plots.

Thanks to these urban gardens, residents of Bornova can produce their own food while reconnecting with nature and escaping the stress of city life. With women playing an active role in the process, the initiative contributes to both household economies and stronger community solidarity.
