Bornova’s Elders Follow the 8,500-Year-Old Traces

Elderly residents benefiting from Bornova Municipality’s Healthy Aging Center enjoyed a special day immersed in history and culture. The group visited Yeşilova and Yassıtepe Mounds, two of İzmir’s most significant archaeological sites, witnessing the city’s 8,500-year-old past firsthand. As part of the tour, they also visited the Ata Memory House, where they reminisced and relived cherished memories from the past.

The group also visited the newly named Zerrin Gençtürk Annex Building and Urbanism Library—home to the Bornova Municipality City Theater (BBŞT) Academy. There, they met with Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki and had the chance to explore both historical and municipal cultural projects on site.

Mayor Eşki: “You are our greatest treasure”

During his conversation with Bornova’s senior citizens, Mayor Eşki listened to their thoughts and suggestions.

“History is not only preserved in books but also lives in the memories of those who have experienced it. The bridge we build today between past and future strengthens our connection to Bornova. The experiences and wisdom of our elders are our greatest treasure,” said Eşki, highlighting the importance of inclusive social initiatives led by the municipality.

An Active and Fulfilling Life at the Healthy Aging Center

Bornova Municipality’s Healthy Aging Center offers numerous activities to help residents aged 60 and over stay physically and mentally active while remaining socially engaged. In addition to workshops such as sports, dance, handicrafts, digital literacy, and memoir writing, the center organizes cultural excursions to enhance participants' quality of life. Every day, hundreds of elderly Bornova residents come together to learn, grow, and continue to contribute.
