Flood Alert in Bornova
Heavy rainfall in a short time hits Bornova
Mayor Eşki and municipal teams were on duty until morning
While heavy rainfall across İzmir caused flooding in Bornova, Bornova Municipality responded throughout the night with all its units, intervening in flood incidents, reopening closed roads, and carrying out cleaning operations. Mayor Ömer Eşki personally monitored the work on site alongside municipal teams until the early hours of the morning, emphasizing that the rainfall was extremely intense within a very short period and that teams made great sacrifices to reach every affected area. It was reported that the coordinated efforts with İZSU would continue throughout the day.
As heavy downpours intensified across İzmir starting in the evening hours, Bornova became one of the districts receiving the highest amount of rainfall. Due to the intense precipitation falling in a short period, many neighborhoods experienced flooding, and several streets and avenues were temporarily closed to traffic. Overflowing streams and floodwaters negatively affected daily life in the district.
Crisis desk established
As the impact of the rainfall increased, Bornova Municipality quickly established a crisis desk. All relevant units—especially the Departments of Public Works, Cleaning Services, Parks and Gardens, Rural Services, and Municipal Police—worked in a state of alert throughout the night in neighborhoods, villages, and industrial zones in coordination with İZSU teams.
Closed roads were reopened using heavy machinery, while vacuum trucks were deployed in flooded areas. Garbage containers and waste carried away by floodwaters were collected and moved to safe locations. Mud accumulations caused by overflowing streams were cleared, allowing roads and sidewalks to be reopened for public use.
Mayor Eşki: “The rainfall occurred in a very short time and with great intensity”
Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki personally accompanied the teams working in the field throughout the night. Together with department heads, he toured the affected areas and monitored the operations on site until the first light of morning.
Emphasizing that the rainfall occurred within a very short time and with an intensity beyond expectations, Mayor Eşki stated:
“This situation caused sudden flooding in some areas. However, our teams worked with great dedication throughout the night to reach every point. Together with İZSU teams, we are in the field with all our strength to minimize the inconvenience experienced by our citizens.”
Operations continue during the day
Response efforts that began last night are continuing without interruption today. Cleaning teams are being dispatched to homes affected by flooding, while mud accumulated in the streets is being cleared. Tree branches and debris in parks, green areas, and on roads are being collected. Through damage assessment and cleaning efforts, the municipality aims to restore normal life in the district as quickly as possible.
Municipality’s call to citizens
Bornova Municipality officials called on residents to remain cautious against possible further rainfall and urged them to contact the relevant municipal units in case of emergencies.
