Endometriosis Awareness in Bornova
“Menstrual Pain Is Not Just a Normal Period Symptom!”
Women shared their experiences, experts explained endometriosis
As part of Endometriosis Awareness Month (March 1–31), Bornova Municipality organized an event titled “The Conversation Without a Name” under the slogan “Menstrual Pain Is Not Just a Normal Period Symptom!” at the Yeşilova Mound Visitor Center.
Associate Professor Dr. Müjde Canday, a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology, was the guest speaker at the event. While providing medical information about endometriosis, women living with the condition also shared their personal experiences, helping to raise awareness.
During the event, participants gained both medical insights and a sense of solidarity by connecting with others who have similar experiences with endometriosis—a condition that is often overlooked in women’s health despite its significant impact on quality of life.
“Chocolate cyst is a chronic disease”
In her speech, Associate Professor Dr. Müjde Canday explained that endometriosis—commonly referred to as a “chocolate cyst”—is a chronic condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus.
Canday noted that the disease is most commonly seen in women in their 30s and 40s, emphasizing that symptoms can vary greatly. While some women may experience no symptoms at all, others may suffer from severe pain that significantly affects daily life.
She stated that endometriosis may present with symptoms such as severe pelvic pain, painful intercourse, abdominal bloating, and gas. If left untreated, it can make it more difficult to conceive; however, with regular check-ups and personalized treatment methods, its effects can be managed.
Most common symptoms
Dr. Canday listed the most common symptoms of endometriosis as:
-
Increasing menstrual pain over time
-
Chronic pain in the lower abdomen and lower back
-
Pain during sexual intercourse
-
Pain during bowel movements or urination during menstruation
-
Bloating, constipation, or diarrhea
-
Infertility
Symptoms can be managed with treatment
Emphasizing that there is no definitive cure that completely eliminates endometriosis, Canday stated that symptoms can be effectively managed through various treatment methods. These may include hormonal therapies, pain management approaches, surgical intervention when necessary, and supportive treatments recommended by physicians.
She underlined that early diagnosis and regular medical follow-up are crucial in managing the disease.
Visit to Yeşilova Mound
Following the talk, participants joined a guided tour of Yeşilova Mound and its visitor center, where excavations dating back 8,500 years shed light on İzmir’s ancient history.
As part of the program, the women also took part in a pottery workshop, gaining hands-on experience while enjoying an engaging and informative day.
