4 April 2026

The Wisdom of the Past Meets the Technology of the Future at Yeşilova Mound

Bornova Municipality organized the “Intergenerational Learning – Digital Grandchild” event, where young people provided hands-on smartphone training to older adults. The program, attended by Clinical Psychologist Zuhal Sarıarslan, emphasized the importance of intergenerational communication. The event concluded with a visit to Yeşilova Höyüğü and a pottery workshop.

Bornova Municipality hosted the event at the Yeşilova Höyüğü Visitor Center to strengthen intergenerational solidarity and enhance communication between different age groups. Elderly participants and young people came together at the same tables, sharing both technological knowledge and life experiences.

Technology from the young, life experience from the elders

During the event, students from the Sociology Department of Dokuz Eylül University provided practical training on smartphone use for older participants. They demonstrated everyday digital skills such as sending voice messages, scanning QR codes, converting WhatsApp voice messages into text, using speed dial, and activating features that announce the caller’s name aloud. Participants immediately practiced what they learned, building a stronger connection with technology.

Expert highlights the importance of intergenerational communication

Clinical Psychologist Zuhal Sarıarslan, who spoke at the event, emphasized the significance of intergenerational communication in an increasingly digital world. She underlined that technology is merely a tool, and the real value lies in the bonds and mutual understanding established between generations. At the end of the program, one participant also shared their thoughts and feelings.

A learning experience intertwined with history

As part of the program, participants toured Yeşilova Höyüğü with archaeologists, witnessing the region’s rich history. The event concluded with a pottery workshop, where participants experienced the joy of creating and learning together.
