Mayor Eşki: “Collecting Bornova’s Daily Waste Is the Largest Public Operation in İzmir”

Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki took to the streets with the first light of day on World Cleanup Day, September 20, joining the massive clean-up operation in the Yeşilova and Karacaoğlan neighborhoods. Emphasizing that Bornova is the city generating the highest amount of waste in İzmir, Mayor Eşki called on all citizens to be more mindful, saying, “The greatest cleanup starts with not littering.”

As part of World Cleanup Day on September 20, Bornova Municipality has given major momentum to the district-wide collective clean-up campaign. The detailed cleaning operations carried out in a different neighborhood each day were conducted simultaneously in Yeşilova and Karacaoğlan neighborhoods on this meaningful day. Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki took to the field with municipal staff in the early morning hours, inspected the work on site and personally contributed to the clean-up mobilization.

24/7 Continuous Work with 360 Personnel and 49 Vehicles

Mayor Ömer Eşki highlighted the enormous scale of Bornova’s cleaning operations with figures, noting that a large team works continuously to keep the district clean. Under Bornova Municipality’s Directorate of Cleaning Affairs, cleaning services are carried out 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in three shifts per day, with 360 personnel and a fleet of 49 vehicles serving different functions.

Mayor Eşki Calls on Citizens: “Don’t Litter”

Speaking from the field and emphasizing that the problem cannot be completely solved without cooperation from citizens, Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki made the following statement:

“September 20 is World Cleanup Day. We are also carrying out collective cleaning operations in a different neighborhood every day. Today, we will conduct a joint clean-up operation in two neighborhoods, Yeşilova and Karacaoğlan. With our 360 personnel and a total of 49 vehicles serving different functions, we are making an intensive effort to keep the city clean 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, across three shifts each day.

However, even with this workforce, even if we had more vehicles, and even if we spent the entire day dealing solely with this issue, we will not be able to solve the cleanliness problem unless we cooperate with our citizens.

The largest public operation in İzmir is collecting Bornova’s daily waste. Bornova is a city with industrial areas that generate far more waste than its population would suggest. The waste collected here is the highest in İzmir in terms of both density and volume.

My request to all our citizens is this: Please remember that the greatest cleanup starts with not littering.

Waste is being left indiscriminately around waste containers. Bulky waste is similarly being left scattered around. People think they can get rid of construction debris by dumping it in different areas and remote corners. But sooner or later, we inevitably encounter every piece of waste that we fail to put properly in a waste bin or dispose of correctly.

This city belongs to all of us, and we will leave this city to our children. For a better, cleaner and more prosperous life, we invite everyone to be more responsible and to support our cleaning efforts.”
