Bornova Municipality Continues to Expand Its Urban Gardens Project

As Bornova Municipality, we continue to expand our Urban Gardens Project, which was launched to support sustainable agriculture, empower women, and promote healthy food production within the city. With urban gardens operating in the neighborhoods of Altındağ, Işıkkent, Mevlana, Pınarbaşı, Rafetpaşa, EVKA-4, and Doğanlar, we have now reached a total of 782 plots and 759 women producers.

Implemented under the leadership of Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki, the project transforms underutilized parks and suitable public spaces into productive community gardening areas for women. Participants are provided with cultivation plots free of charge, while seedlings are supplied by Bornova Municipality.

The distribution of the urban gardens is as follows:

  • Altındağ Urban Garden: 53 plots – 58 women (Koşukavak and Birlik Neighborhoods)
  • Işıkkent Urban Garden: 65 plots – 52 women (Işıklar and Egemenlik Neighborhoods)
  • Mevlana Urban Garden: 76 plots – 75 women
  • Pınarbaşı Urban Garden: 49 plots – 42 women
  • Rafetpaşa Urban Garden: 17 plots – 20 women
  • EVKA-4 Urban Garden: 244 plots – 234 women (EVKA-4 and İnönü Neighborhoods)
  • Doğanlar Urban Garden: 278 plots – 278 women

With a total of 782 plots across 7 urban gardens and 759 women actively engaged in production, the project enables women to contribute to their household economies while gaining access to fresh, healthy, and naturally grown food. As Bornova Municipality, we remain committed to strengthening production, solidarity, and sustainable living throughout our city, guided by the belief that the Republic grows stronger through the contributions and labor of women.
