The Enduring Sorrow of Karbala After 1,387 Years

The sorrow of Karbala was commemorated in Bornova during the Imam Hussein and the Martyrs of Karbala Memorial Program, held in Yeşilova. Speakers emphasized that the tragedy of Karbala, which occurred 1,387 years ago, remains a shared grief across the Islamic world. They also highlighted that Imam Hussein’s stand against oppression continues to serve as a guiding example in the face of the ongoing humanitarian tragedies in Palestine and Gaza.

Organized by the Yeşilova Ahl al-Bayt Mosque Association, the memorial program brought together Bornova district officials, representatives of Ahl al-Bayt associations, and numerous citizens. The event began with a recitation from the Holy Qur’an, followed by a dramatic reenactment of the events of Karbala in 680 CE, creating deeply emotional moments for attendees.

A Sorrow That Has Endured for 1,387 Years

Speaking at the event, Bornova District Governor Muzaffer Şahiner stated that the pain of Karbala continues to resonate throughout the Islamic world despite the passage of nearly fourteen centuries. Expressing his hope of attaining the intercession of Prophet Muhammad’s grandsons, Imam Hasan and Imam Hussein, Şahiner noted that Imam Hussein and his companions were rewarded with divine grace for the hardships they endured. He concluded by recalling the Prophet Muhammad’s saying, “A person will be with those whom they love,” and thanked everyone who attended the ceremony.

“Oppression Will Never Prevail”

Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki stated that the attack against the Ahl al-Bayt would never be forgotten, regardless of how many centuries pass. Drawing parallels between the tragedy of Karbala and present-day conflicts, Eşki condemned the violence and loss of civilian lives in Palestine, Gaza, and Lebanon. He emphasized that humanity is living through a historic turning point and expressed his belief that attempts to establish dominance through violence will ultimately fail. He also stressed that memorial events such as this are essential for preserving collective memory and preventing the recurrence of oppression.

“The Islamic World Owes a Debt of Gratitude to Imam Hussein”

Abdullah Şabahat, Imam of the Yeşilova Ahl al-Bayt Mosque, began his remarks by offering condolences to followers of the Ahl al-Bayt during the holy month of Muharram. He stated that Imam Hussein revitalized Islam by sacrificing his life to preserve its true path, declaring, “The Islamic world owes a debt of gratitude to Imam Hussein.” Quoting the Prophet Muhammad’s saying, “Hussein is the light of guidance and the ship of salvation,” Şabahat emphasized that the faithful continue to gather in remembrance of Karbala and stand against all efforts to erase its legacy.
