The Area Around Paterson Mansion Transformed Back into a Living Space

A Project by Bornova Municipality Bringing Relief to Both Animals and Residents

Bornova Municipality has cleaned and secured the “Cat Park” area surrounding the historic Paterson Mansion, which had remained neglected due to an unfinished restoration process. Through collaboration with HOPEDER, waste and overgrown vegetation were cleared, and old animal shelters were replaced with new ones. These improvements not only reduced fire risks but also transformed the area into a healthier living space.

Bornova Municipality took action following increasing public complaints about the long-neglected surroundings of the 167-year-old Paterson Mansion, owned by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Although not under municipal responsibility, the area had become unsafe and unsanitary. Municipal teams quickly intervened to restore it into a secure and organized environment for both residents and stray animals.

Comprehensive cleaning efforts were carried out by the Directorate of Public Works and the Directorate of Parks and Gardens in the area popularly known as “Cat Park.” With the support of members from the Association for Hands Sharing Life with Animals (HOPEDER), the site was thoroughly cleaned of waste and wild vegetation. Old, makeshift cat shelters were removed and replaced with new, healthier shelters provided by the municipality.

From Neglected Space to Safe Living Area

Paterson Mansion, one of Bornova’s key landmarks, is situated on a vast 133-decare property. During the restoration process, the site was enclosed with panels, leaving a large adjacent area—particularly in front of the Bornova Central Covered Marketplace—abandoned over time. While the space informally became a refuge for stray cats, uncontrolled waste accumulation and dense vegetation posed serious health and safety risks.

Especially during the summer months, dry vegetation increased the risk of fire. Although the municipality had previously conducted cleaning operations in the area, the latest comprehensive intervention ensured a hygienic and safe environment.

Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki emphasized that this initiative goes beyond routine cleaning and is part of a broader commitment to improving urban safety and quality of life:

“Paterson Mansion and its surroundings are among Bornova’s significant landmarks. Even though it is not under our direct responsibility, we could not ignore its neglected state. We acted swiftly to ensure both the safety of our citizens and better living conditions for stray animals. By reorganizing Cat Park, we have created a safe and livable space for all.”
