Büyükpark’s Green Spaces Go “Automatic”

10 October 2026

Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki inspected the landscaping works at Büyükpark, one of the district’s iconic public spaces, and announced the completion of an automatic irrigation system set to transform the park. During the site visit, accompanied by Ali Çelik, a beloved municipal employee who retired after 40 years of service, Mayor Eşki stated that the new automated system would help Büyükpark conserve water and remain lush and green throughout all four seasons.

Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki inspected the extensive landscaping and renovation works carried out by the Parks and Gardens Directorate at Büyükpark, one of the district’s most important landmarks. Home to municipal facilities such as Down Café, Kızlar Kahvesi, and Çınarevi, as well as the Uğur Mumcu Culture and Arts Center, Ayfer Feray Open-Air Theatre, the Municipal Council and Wedding Hall, a children’s playground, and a spacious public square, Büyükpark is preparing to welcome Bornova residents with its fully renovated infrastructure.

During Mayor Eşki’s site visit, he had a warm and memorable encounter with Ali Çelik, affectionately known as “Ali Çavuş,” a beloved figure in the district who worked as a foreman in Bornova Municipality’s Parks and Gardens Directorate for more than 40 years before retiring in 2023.

An Automatic Solution to Büyükpark’s Drying-Out Problem

Mayor Ömer Eşki announced the completion of the automatic irrigation project, which is set to transform the park, explaining that the municipality had responded to previous criticism over Büyükpark’s drying-out with extensive infrastructure work carried out behind the scenes.

Emphasizing the municipality’s commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly practices, Mayor Eşki said:

“We used to receive a lot of criticism about Büyükpark drying out, but behind the scenes, we were carrying out extensive work on an automatic irrigation system. We have finally completed that work. From now on, both Büyükpark and all other parks in Bornova will remain lush and green through systematic irrigation. We will maximize water efficiency with the automatic irrigation system. May it bring great benefits to all Bornova residents.”

“As Though Ali Çavuş Were Looking After Every Corner…”

Thanking retired municipal employee Ali Çelik for his years of dedicated service to Bornova, Mayor Eşki continued:

“Everyone who knows Bornova and Bornova Municipality knows Ali Çavuş. He began working in the parks before 1980 and continued serving until 2023. He has made an enormous contribution to Bornova. Thanks to the new system we have installed, Büyükpark will remain lush, green, and spotless, as though Ali Çavuş were personally looking after every corner. I would like to thank him once again for everything he has contributed.”

Retired municipal foreman Ali Çelik expressed his satisfaction with the projects transforming Bornova’s appearance and thanked Mayor Ömer Eşki for the ongoing work across the district, from parks and roads to cleaning services and environmental improvements. He also wished the mayor continued success in his duties.
