Over 3,000 points across the district to be monitored

Bornova Municipality is set to monitor security and cleanliness processes in real time with more than 3,000 cameras and sensors through the Smart City Management and Innovation Center, which will fully create its “digital twin” for the first time at the district level in Turkey. Mayor Ömer Eşki inspected the camera installation works in the 5th Industrial Site, Süvari Street, and Küçük Park, emphasizing their goal to make Bornova “the safest and cleanest city in Turkey.” The center will function as both a decision-support system and a crisis desk, managing all urban data—from infrastructure to energy, and from environment to transportation—under one roof.

Bornova Municipality continues at full speed with the Smart City Management and Innovation Center project, the first in Turkey to fully implement a district-level digital twin. Cameras placed throughout the district will allow for real-time monitoring of security and cleanliness. Mayor Ömer Eşki inspected the works on-site at the 5th Industrial Site, Süvari Street, and Küçük Park.

Digital Transformation: Bornova Monitored 24/7
During his inspection at the 5th Industrial Site, Mayor Eşki said that to prevent frequent illegal dumping of construction debris, a new dumping site would be opened and the area would be monitored by cameras:

“We have set out to make Bornova both the safest and the cleanest city in Turkey. We will watch over every corner of the district with more than 3,000 cameras. The city’s safety and cleanliness will be under constant surveillance. We are building a Bornova that is observable and traceable.”

Technology for Safety and Cleanliness on Süvari Street
Inspecting works on Süvari Street—one of Bornova’s busiest areas—Mayor Eşki noted the high volume of both vehicle and pedestrian traffic, as well as the presence of cafés and restaurants:

“This street has, at times, seen incidents of a judicial nature. With the new camera systems, sidewalk encroachments, the status of waste bins, and overall safety will be monitored in real time from a central location. Our ‘Digitalization and Smart City’ vision is coming to life here as well.”

Smart Systems for Public Order in Küçük Park
In Küçük Park, one of Bornova’s liveliest spots, the municipality has taken measures against safety concerns and disorder, creating a dedicated parking area for motorcycle couriers. Highlighting the deterrent effect of the camera systems, Mayor Eşki said:

“When the cameras detect unattended items, they immediately trigger an alarm, and municipal police and law enforcement are notified. Daily pedestrian counts will also be possible. After İZSU completes its work, we will redesign Küçük Park to be worthy of İzmir.”

Turkey’s First District-Level Digital Twin
The Smart City Management and Innovation Center, established by Bornova Municipality, aims to manage infrastructure, environmental, energy, and safety processes based on scientific data through its vision of digital, urban, and green transformation.

Using a numerical terrain and surface model to create a 3D city model, the municipality will be able to manage all data—from park lighting to social aid, and from energy consumption to environmental risks—in real time. The center will also function as a decision-support system and crisis desk.

The project brings together components such as Smart Environment, Smart Energy, Smart Transportation, and Smart Infrastructure on a single platform. With Big Data, IoT sensors, and a Context Broker infrastructure, real-time decision-support systems will be activated. An innovation ecosystem will be created for universities, the private sector, and entrepreneurs to test and scale up smart city solutions.

The decision-support system is planned to go live at the start of the new year.
