Mayor Eşki: “Together, we will build a carbon-neutral Bornova that produces its own energy.”

Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki attended the Smart City Expo in Barcelona, where he examined innovative practices in sustainable energy, carbon neutrality, and digital transformation. Highlighting Bornova’s goal of becoming a city that produces its own energy and reduces its carbon emissions to zero, Mayor Eşki also visited the Consulate General of Türkiye in Barcelona.

Bornova Municipality has taken an important step in its sustainability and digitalization vision through international engagements. Led by Mayor Ömer Eşki, the delegation attended the Smart City Expo 2025 in Barcelona, gaining first-hand insight into advanced smart city technologies and innovative municipal practices.

Bornova’s Vision at the Smart City Expo

Evaluating the visit, Mayor Eşki summarized Bornova’s sustainability targets as follows:
“Our main objective is to become a municipality that produces its own energy, reduces its carbon emissions to zero, and even exceeds this by generating surplus energy. To accelerate Bornova’s green transition, we are examining the best global practices on site and bringing this experience to our city.”

During the expo, the delegation explored potential collaborations in areas including renewable energy technologies, recycling systems, smart transportation solutions, and digital municipal services.

International Collaboration at the Barcelona Consulate

As part of the visit, the Bornova delegation met with Deputy Consul General Ahmet Çelik at the Consulate General of Türkiye in Barcelona. The meeting focused on Bornova’s expanding international relations, sustainability goals, and opportunities for future joint projects.

Mayor Eşki emphasized that Bornova aims to become one of Europe’s exemplary climate-friendly cities—not only a leading city in Türkiye—highlighting the importance of global cooperation in achieving this vision.

New Steps Toward a Green, Digital, and Participatory Bornova

The Barcelona program is expected to lay the groundwork for strategic partnerships that will strengthen Bornova Municipality’s climate-conscious and digital urban transformation agenda. Following the visit, initiatives in renewable energy, carbon neutrality, and smart city applications will gain fresh momentum.
