Mayor Eşki Elected to the Energy Cities Board of Directors

Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki was elected to the Board of Directors of Energy Cities during the organization’s General Assembly held in Guimarães, strengthening the representation of both Bornova and Türkiye in European energy policies. Addressing members online during the meeting, Mayor Eşki emphasized that renewable energy is critical not only for the environment but also for global peace, while highlighting Bornova’s commitment to the European Union’s climate goals and sustainability vision.

One of Europe’s most established local government networks guiding the transition to sustainable energy, Energy Cities held its annual forum and general assembly meeting on April 28, 2026, in Guimarães. Conducted in a hybrid format with both physical and online participation, the meeting concluded with the election of Mayor Ömer Eşki to the organization’s Board of Directors, the strategic decision-making body of the network.

With this development, Bornova—and consequently Türkiye—has once again gained strong representation within Europe’s energy policy decision-making mechanisms.

Energy and Peace Emphasis: “Renewable Energy Is a Model for World Peace”

Addressing board members online during the election process, Mayor Ömer Eşki highlighted the relationship between energy policies and global peace. Stating that conflicts throughout history have often stemmed from the unequal sharing of energy resources, Eşki noted that the transition to renewable energy is not only an environmental necessity but also a model for achieving world peace.

Eşki also stressed that technological progress and sustainability in this field can only thrive through strong parliamentary systems and transparent democracy. Recalling that the European Union’s pluralistic democratic approach serves as a guarantee for regional and global peace, he reiterated his support for Türkiye’s full membership in the European Union.

Emphasizing that Bornova has fully embraced the European Union’s 2030 and 2050 climate targets, Eşki underlined the critical role of local governments in this transformation process.

At the Same Table with Europe’s Leading Cities

In the new term, Bornova Municipality will serve on the board alongside Europe’s leading sustainability-focused cities, including Assen, Heidelberg, Križevci, Leuven, Lviv, Matosinhos, Paris, Valencia, Växjö, and Verona.

This representation demonstrates that Bornova has become an influential actor not only at the local level but also on the international stage.
