7 July 2025

Garbage house cleaned, seven-year nightmare ends

The drama of a so-called “garbage house” in Zafer Neighborhood, Altındağ, Bornova has come to an end thanks to the swift intervention of Bornova Municipality, following complaints from local residents. It was discovered that an 80-year-old retired couple, along with their daughter and niece, had been trying to survive in unhealthy conditions in a two-story house on 4495 Street for nearly seven years.

Detailed cleaning operation

Acting on the report, Bornova Municipality carried out a comprehensive operation with the coordination of its Cleaning Services, Public Works, and Parks and Gardens Directorates. The operation, conducted with the support of municipal police teams and law enforcement, involved removing truckloads of garbage from the house and disinfecting the area to restore hygienic conditions.

Shock among neighbors, sensitive approach from the municipality

According to neighborhood residents, the family had become increasingly withdrawn over time and did not respond to offers of help. The neighbors shared that they had been greatly distressed by the odors coming from the house, and expressed deep sadness upon learning that four people had been living inside under such conditions. Following the intervention, the family was referred to relevant social support services.
