Bornova Municipality Hosts Breast Cancer Awareness Panel

27 October 2025

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Bornova Municipality organized a panel to highlight the importance of early diagnosis. Expert physicians provided valuable information on self-examination, screening methods, and risk factors for women’s health.

The “Breast Cancer Awareness Panel”, jointly organized by Bornova Municipality and Özel Ata Health Hospital, was held at Altındağ Atatürk Cultural Center, Yıldız Kenter Stage. General Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. Utku Tanoğlu and Obstetrics & Gynecology Specialist Op. Dr. Gökben Yüksel took part as speakers. CHP Women’s Branch Central Executive Board Member Rahşan Nazlıoğlu also attended, supporting Bornova Municipality’s awareness initiative.

Focus on Early Diagnosis and Genetic Risks

Op. Dr. Utku Tanoğlu emphasized that breast cancer cases are increasing every year and noted that early diagnosis saves lives:

“One out of every 8 women is diagnosed with breast cancer. In the past, this rate was between 1 in 8–10, but due to the rising use of carcinogenic products in recent years, the incidence has increased. When detected early, treatment is quite manageable. We should fear late diagnosis, not breast cancer.”

Dr. Tanoğlu also highlighted genetic risks:

“Women who have a family history of breast cancer around the age of 40 should not ignore the warning signs. Early menstruation, late menopause, and consumption of hormone-added foods increase the risk. Annual surgical check-ups are essential, and mammography should begin at age 40. Additionally, women should conduct monthly self-checks starting at age 20.”

Call for Regular Health Check-ups

Op. Dr. Gökben Yüksel pointed out the unequal access to healthcare among rural women:

“Every woman who menstruates after age 20 should regularly perform self-breast examinations.”

Dr. Yüksel explained that hormone treatments are not entirely prohibited but must be applied correctly:

“Dosage and duration are crucial in hormone therapy. Low-dose, short-term treatment is recommended depending on individual health needs.”

She also warned about avoidable risk factors:

“Avoid obesity, alcohol, fatty foods, and unnecessary cosmetic surgeries. Physical activity and childbirth reduce risk. Even without a family history, routine check-ups must not be neglected. We recommend MRI for women aged 25-40, followed by mammography.”

During the panel, participants had the opportunity to ask physicians questions on topics they were curious about.
