Safety Railings Installed to Protect Children in Bornova

6 November 2026

First Stop: Kızılay; Altındağ Next

Bornova Municipality has launched a comprehensive environmental improvement initiative to maximize traffic safety for students during school arrival and dismissal hours. As the first phase of the project, sidewalks were widened and protective railings were installed in front of Malazgirt Primary School in Kızılay Neighborhood. Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki emphasized that safe school projects will continue without interruption.

A Safety Barrier Around Schools: Sidewalks Widened and Railings Installed

Narrow roads and inadequate sidewalks in front of Malazgirt Primary School, located near the beginning of Kızılay Slope, posed a significant risk to students, particularly during dismissal hours. Responding to requests from the neighborhood headman's office, Bornova Municipality teams quickly took action and carried out a major improvement in the area.

First, the locations of waste containers that obstructed traffic and blocked pedestrians’ visibility were changed. The sidewalks were then widened to provide students with more room to walk, making the road safer. Finally, sturdy protective railings were installed along the sidewalk edges to prevent children from suddenly stepping into the road.

Mayor Eşki: “Our Main Goal Is to Protect Our Children from Traffic”

Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki inspected the completed work on site together with Neighborhood Headwoman Besra Girgör and the technical team, emphasizing that children's safety is their top priority.

Mayor Eşki said:

“The sidewalk here used to be much narrower, and there were waste containers in the area. Our neighborhood headwoman had also pointed out that children attending this school could face difficulties. First, we relocated the waste containers and widened the sidewalks. Then we installed the railings.

We are developing a safety plan for the areas in front of schools. Our primary goal is to ensure that children are protected from traffic when coming to school, entering the school, and waiting for a bus or vehicle after classes. We have now completed the work at this school. Our next stop is Evrenosoğlu School in Altındağ. Very soon, we will install the same protective railings there to keep our children safe from traffic.”

The Safe School Route Project Continues in Altındağ

Bornova Municipality’s school safety initiative will not be limited to Kızılay Neighborhood. Municipal teams are assessing the surroundings of schools across the district to identify locations where safety improvements are needed. Following the work at Malazgirt Primary School, the next location has been determined. Similar sidewalk widening and railing installation work will soon be carried out in front of Evrenosoğlu School in Altındağ Neighborhood, helping ensure the safety of children in the area.
