A Heartwarming Visit to Down Café by University Students

Students from the Textile Engineering Department of Ege University carried out a meaningful social responsibility project as part of the Erasmus+ TexUnite project. Through the initiative titled “Knitting Lab,” scarves and gloves knitted from recycled yarn were gifted to individuals with Down syndrome working at the +1 Down Café, operated by Bornova Municipality.

More Than Just a Scarf: A Warm Step Towards Love, Solidarity, and Awareness

These handmade gifts by Ege University students were more than just winter accessories—they became warm, symbolic gestures of sustainability, compassion, and equality. The students met with individuals with Down syndrome at +1 Down Café, where they personally presented the scarves and gloves they had knitted, forming genuine connections. The visit was filled with smiles and served as a shared moment of love, empathy, and social responsibility.

“A Valuable Step”

Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki emphasized that young people embracing important values such as sustainability and social responsibility represents a valuable step for the future and a great source of hope.

“Supporting the visibility and active participation of individuals with Down syndrome in all areas of life is one of our top priorities. I thank Ege University and everyone who contributed to this heartfelt project,” he said.

TexUnite: Weaving Sustainability Through Education

The Erasmus+ TexUnite project aims to increase university students’ awareness of sustainability and encourage them to share what they learn with the broader community.
