The Bornova Tulip Brings Hope and Color to the District

Bornova Municipality has revived the Bornova Tulip, an ecological treasure of the district that was thought to be extinct. After nearly 30 years, this rare species has bloomed again and is now on display for visitors at Dramalılar Mansion.

The Bornova Tulip, scientifically known as Tulipa Culisiena, was cultivated in Bornova by the world-renowned botanist Edward Whittall in the late 1800s. It had not been seen since the 1990s and was believed to have disappeared from the region. Through a collaborative effort between Bornova Municipality and the Aegean Agricultural Research Institute, the species has now been successfully reproduced.

Mayor Eşki Planted the First Bulb

The revival process began when Mayor Ömer Eşki planted the first tulip bulb in Kayadibi Neighborhood. Visiting the tulips displayed at Dramalılar Mansion, Eşki stated:

“It is a great joy to see the Bornova Tulip, once thought extinct, blooming again in its native soil. We are working to preserve this valuable heritage and pass it on to future generations.”

He also announced that applications for geographical indication status had been submitted for the Bornova Tulip, following the successful registrations of the Bornova Muscat Grape and Bornova Henna Okra.

To Be Integrated into Urban Landscaping

Bornova Municipality plans to incorporate the tulip into parks and green spaces in the coming years.

“The Bornova Tulip will take its place in our parks and green areas. It will contribute to the city’s aesthetics and bring joy to our residents,” said Eşki.

Symbolizing the Turkish Flag

Grown under natural conditions in Kayadibi Neighborhood, the tulip attracts attention with its red and white colors, resembling the Turkish flag. Its six-petaled structure and symbolic significance make it a remarkable species.
