In Bornova, Climate Crisis Highlighted Through Art and Science

Hosted by Bornova Municipality, the event “Little Hearts Leave Traces on Nature” featured an exhibition of children’s environment-themed paintings, followed by expert presentations and workshops on the climate crisis and waste management. The event, organized by the Republican People’s Party (CHP) Izmir Women’s Branch, emphasized the importance of public awareness and collective action against climate change.

Art and Dialogue for World Environment Day

As part of World Environment Day (June 5), the CHP Izmir Provincial Women’s Branch Environmental, Nature and Animal Rights Commission, in collaboration with Bornova Municipality, organized the “Little Hearts Leave Traces on Nature” art exhibition and discussion event. The event, held at Dramalılar Mansion, began with a display of children’s paintings reflecting their sensitivity towards nature and the environment, followed by expert presentations on the climate crisis and waste management.

“We Must Protect the Future Together”

In her opening speech, CHP Izmir Women’s Branch Chair Zahide Kurun highlighted that the environment is the shared habitat of all living beings, not just humans, stating:
“Our common habitat is home not only to us humans, but also to millions of other creatures. Protecting this environment that shelters both visible and invisible life, and rightfully passing down today’s heritage to tomorrow, is one of our foremost responsibilities.”

“Climate Change Has Reached Crisis Level”

Bornova Deputy Mayor Duygu Bölük, who is also a member of the commission, described climate change as a crisis:
“Climate change has now turned into a climate crisis. That’s why, as a municipality, as the Republican People’s Party, and in cooperation with NGOs and academics working in this field, we wanted to address this issue that threatens our future together.”

“The Problem Is Today’s, the Solution Is Everyone’s”

CHP Izmir Women’s Branch Deputy Chair Ismigül Eroğlu summarized the purpose of the event:
“Climate change is no longer just tomorrow’s problem, but today’s as well. Every individual, every institution, every nation must act together. We are here today to draw attention to this growing problem.”

Scientific Contributions, Concrete Solutions

Commission Chair Nur Çetiner outlined the program content:
“Today, together with our expert speakers, we will gain knowledge on topics directly impacting our environment and future, such as climate change, waste management, recovery of organic waste, and carbon footprint measurement.”

Following the exhibition, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Meneviş Uzbay Pirili from the Zeytice Association for Supporting Ecological Living conducted a carbon footprint measurement session. Nevin Bağdatlı, Chair of IZYASAM Women’s Cooperative, delivered a presentation on organic waste recycling. A hands-on workshop was also held on composting using bokashi buckets and drums. Water-saving faucet aerators were distributed to participants, offering practical solutions for daily life.
