18 October 2025

Bornova Municipality City Theatre (BBŞT) opened its new season with “The Golden Dragon”, a play by German writer Roland Schimmelpfennig. The gala premiere, staged at the Uğur Mumcu Cultural and Arts Center, received great acclaim from the audience.

Bornova Municipality City Theatre (BBŞT) marked the beginning of its new theatre season with “The Golden Dragon”, written by acclaimed German playwright Roland Schimmelpfennig. The gala premiere took place at the Sevda Şener Stage of the Uğur Mumcu Cultural and Arts Center and was met with enthusiastic applause. At the end of the performance, the packed audience gave the cast a long standing ovation.

A Journey Through Alienation, Despair, and Humanity

The 70-minute one-act play draws a powerful parallel between “a person separated from their homeland” and “a tooth pulled from its root”, exploring themes of migration, alienation, and indifference. Directed by Ozan Gökmen, the production stands out for its fragmented structure and poetic, metaphorical language. The Turkish translation was done by Sibel Arslan Yeşilay, dramaturgy by Selda Uzunkaya, and set design by İlker Şahin.

With strong performances by Can Kurşunlu, Fahrettin Esen, Gizem Karasu, Jülide Kara, and Yusuf Ulaş Palabıyık, the play took the audience on an emotional journey, while Gökay Kaçanoğlu’s original music added a striking atmosphere to the stage.

Mayor Eşki: “Art Will Continue to Live in the Heart of Bornova”

Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki emphasized the importance of BBŞT in the city’s cultural life, stating:

“Bornova is the cultural heart of İzmir, with a tradition that spans theatre, music, cinema, and literature. Every performance by our City Theatre adds new value to our city’s cultural heritage. We are proud to present a universal story like ‘The Golden Dragon’ to the people of Bornova. Art will continue to live and thrive in the heart of Bornova.”
