Experts Highlighted the Importance of the HPV Vaccine and Early Diagnosis

Bornova Municipality, in cooperation with Medicana International İzmir Hospital, organized an awareness event at the Uğur Mumcu Culture and Arts Center to draw attention to cervical cancer and the importance of the HPV vaccine. Specialist physicians emphasized that the HPV vaccine and regular screenings are the most effective methods of protection against cervical cancer, while the event underscored the vital importance of early diagnosis and public awareness.

Bornova Municipality, in collaboration with Medicana International İzmir Hospital, held a comprehensive awareness event focusing on cervical cancer and the HPV vaccine. The event, which took place at the Uğur Mumcu Culture and Arts Center, attracted significant interest from the public.

Exhibition Honoring Scientists

As part of the event, an exhibition titled “If It Can Be Prevented Today, It Is Thanks to Them” was opened, featuring representative visuals of scientists who contributed to the development of the Pap smear test and the HPV vaccine. The exhibition highlighted that cervical cancer is a preventable disease.

Speaking at the opening of the event, Bornova Deputy Mayor Duygu Bölük emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and screenings, stating:
“When action is taken with awareness, cervical cancer can cease to be a life-threatening disease. Sharing the knowledge gained here with the wider community is extremely valuable.”

Experts: The HPV Vaccine Is the Strongest Protection

Gynecology and Obstetrics Specialist at Medicana International İzmir Hospital, Op. Dr. Zeynep Kuşku, noted that high-risk types of HPV are responsible for the majority of cervical cancer cases and said:
“Regular screenings and the HPV vaccine are the most effective methods of protection against this type of cancer.”

“The Age of Cancer Is Decreasing”

Oncology Specialist Dr. Murat Keser drew attention to the fact that cancer cases are being seen at increasingly younger ages, stating:
“When cervical cancer progresses, it poses a life-threatening risk. Therefore, preventing the disease before it develops through vaccination and early diagnosis is of great importance.”

Psychological Support Is Part of Treatment

Psychiatry Specialist Assist. Prof. Dr. Müge Yaşar addressed the psychological impact of a cancer diagnosis, saying:
“Patients may naturally enter a grieving process. Successfully navigating this process directly affects the success of the treatment.”
