The Most Comprehensive Hybrid Pole Installed at Abide-i Hürriyet Square

The most comprehensive hybrid energy pole in Turkey, installed by Bornova Municipality at Abide-i Hürriyet Square, will meet the entire electricity demand of the park by simultaneously utilizing solar and wind energy. Mayor Ömer Eşki emphasized that their goal is to generate all of Bornova Municipality’s energy from renewable sources and allocate the savings obtained to social support programs. The hybrid pole will also provide free energy to citizens through mobile phone charging points and a charging station for mobility scooters for people with disabilities.

Abide-i Hürriyet Square, which was brought to the city by Bornova Municipality last May in the Kazım Dirik neighborhood, is now hosting a model project in the field of renewable energy. The most comprehensive hybrid energy pole in Turkey has been put into operation in the square.

Speaking at the site, Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki underlined that the project is not merely a technical investment but also an economic and social transformation initiative.

Mayor Eşki: “We must reduce our dependence on foreign energy”

Mayor Eşki stated:

“Today is a very exciting day for us. We are implementing Turkey’s most comprehensive hybrid pole, which we have been planning and preparing the infrastructure for some time, here at Abide-i Hürriyet Square in Bornova. As you know, the largest cause of Turkey’s current account deficit is energy demand. Because we cannot fully meet our energy needs, we continuously run a current account deficit. We have a vision for Bornova Municipality: to supply all of our energy from renewable sources. This is not an easy process, but it is one we will pursue with determination and accelerate.”

Eşki noted that the hybrid pole will begin generating energy with the first sunlight and wind, adding: “With the energy it produces, it will meet all the electricity needs of this park, including lighting, cameras, Wi-Fi, and the automatic irrigation system.”

Energy savings will return as social support

Highlighting the social dimension of the project, Mayor Eşki said:

“Our fundamental goal is for Bornova Municipality to generate its own electricity, benefit from renewable energy sources, and channel the savings into support for citizens in need—such as offering more affordable meat through municipal butcher shops, cheaper bread from municipal bakeries, greater access to municipal restaurants, and free shopping opportunities at municipal markets. We will grow stronger through renewable energy. We will make Bornova and İzmir stronger through renewable energy.”

Eşki also emphasized that the hybrid pole initiative will not be limited to this square, stating: “Soon, you will see these energy poles extensively installed in medians and parks throughout Bornova.”

Phone charging points and a mobility scooter station included

Sharing technical details of the pole, Mayor Eşki explained the features that will directly benefit citizens:

“Using the energy we generate here, there will be charging inputs compatible with three different types of mobile phones. You will be able to charge your phones here. There will also be a charging station for mobility scooters for people with disabilities in this area. The section you see here will serve as a seating bench for our citizens. Another area will also include a phone charging station. We will continue these efforts to provide free energy to our citizens wherever it is needed.”

Eşki stated that the hexagonal structure at the top of the pole contains solar panels on each surface, while a specially designed blade system for wind energy is located in the lower section. Additional solar panels will soon be mounted on the side surfaces.

“This is the first implementation in Turkey capable of utilizing wind and solar energy simultaneously at such a level. Starting from Bornova, we will expand this model across Turkey,” Mayor Eşki concluded.
