55 Stray Animals Find New Homes

In Bornova, a total of 55 stray animals found new homes through three events organized to microchip, register, and facilitate the adoption of unowned animals in rural neighborhoods. It was announced that these efforts—carried out in cooperation with neighborhood headmen, the District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, Bornova Municipality, the City Council, and animal lovers—will continue after the New Year. Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki emphasized that adoption is the most permanent and humane solution in terms of animal rights.

In line with a decision taken by the İzmir Provincial Animal Protection Board, the Bornova District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry initiated efforts—through neighborhood headmen—to microchip and register stray animals in rural areas. Within this framework, meetings were held in 12 rural neighborhoods within district boundaries with the participation of the Bornova Municipality Directorate of Veterinary Affairs, officials from the District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, neighborhood headmen, the Bornova City Council Animal Rights Group, and animal lovers from Bornova.

Citizens’ Requests Reflected in the Field

During the meetings, requests from citizens were collected by neighborhood headmen and the Bornova City Council Animal Rights Group. Based on these requests, adoption and spay/neuter activities were planned. The first implementation took place in Kayadibi Neighborhood, where 9 dogs were adopted.

55 Animals Adopted in Three Events

Subsequently, two more activities were carried out in the Çiçekliköy, Yakaköy, and Beşyol neighborhoods. In these events, stray dogs were adopted after undergoing spay/neuter procedures. As a result of the three events, a total of 55 stray animals found new homes. While a significant adoption success was achieved through these rural efforts, it was announced that rural adoption activities in Bornova will continue after the New Year.

Mayor Eşki: “Adoption Is the Most Humane and Permanent Solution”

The adoption events, during which animals were identified and registered, were attended by Bornova Deputy Mayor Cem Arıkan, Erol Akcan from the Bornova City Council Animal Rights Working Group, and neighborhood headmen who made major contributions to the project.

Commenting on the efforts, Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki stated: “The most appropriate approach to animal rights is to carry out adoption and registration processes together. Thanks to the strong cooperation we have established in rural areas with our neighborhood headmen, city council, and animal lovers, we are both improving the living conditions of stray animals and producing permanent solutions. We will continue these efforts in Bornova with determination.”
