Bornova Municipality and Çiğli Rotary Club Join Forces

Bornova Municipality and the Çiğli Rotary Club have signed a cooperation protocol for the “Waste Bank Project” to promote recycling and raise environmental awareness. Under this project, waste will be sorted at its source and reintegrated into the economy, while educational and awareness campaigns will be carried out. Waste Bank containers and related equipment will be provided to Bornova Municipality by the Rotary Club free of charge.

Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki and İzmir Çiğli Rotary Club President Mehmet Ali Yontan signed the protocol to highlight the importance of recycling, increase environmental awareness, and ensure that waste is sorted at the source for economic recovery.

Mayor Eşki: “Waste is becoming a growing crisis”

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki emphasized that environmental issues and recycling are top priorities for local governments:

“We thank the Çiğli Rotary Club for taking the lead on this project. We are facing an ever-growing waste problem, and we are at a critical point. If we cannot reverse the situation now, we will be facing an environmental crisis we can no longer manage. Through this collaboration, we aim to raise public awareness and continue our fight for a cleaner, more livable world.”

President of the Çiğli Rotary Club, Mehmet Ali Yontan, shared his confidence in the project, saying:
“We are extremely pleased to collaborate with Bornova Municipality on this initiative. Thanks to Mayor Ömer Eşki’s vision and dedication to environmental issues, I truly believe we will successfully implement this project. Citizens will see firsthand how they contribute to the environment when they bring their household waste to designated collection points such as local marketplaces.”

The "Waste Bank Project" aims to ensure that recyclable waste is separated at the source, collected in an environmentally friendly manner, and converted into raw materials—thus reducing harm to nature and supporting a sustainable circular economy.
