“New Paradigms in Museology” Workshop Brought Together Field Leaders at Yeşilova Mound

Organized in collaboration between the Bornova Municipality and the International Museology Association, the workshop titled “New Paradigms in Museology” was held at the Yeşilova Mound Visitor Center as part of Museum Week. The event aimed to address transformations in museology, discuss contemporary practices, and bring together diverse perspectives.

The workshop brought together Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki, museum founder and cultural figure Kenan Yavuz, International Museology Association President Derya Manav, museum professionals, academics, and cultural sector experts. Discussions focused on the current dynamics of museology and explored approaches that could contribute to the advancement of contemporary museological practices.

A Historical Journey from the Workshop

As part of the program, participants joined a historical tour where Bornova Municipality Museum Director Şükrü Koçak provided insights into the recently opened Abide-i Hürriyet Park. Then, Associate Professor Zafer Derin, Head of the Yeşilova Mound Excavation Team, delivered a presentation on the ongoing archaeological excavations at the Yeşilova and Yassıtepe Mounds.

Mayor Eşki: “Bornova Contributes to the Museology of the New Era”

Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki emphasized the municipality’s commitment to preserving and transmitting cultural heritage to future generations, stating:

“In line with this goal, we established our Museum Directorate. I believe today’s workshop will serve as a pioneering step toward the museology of the new era. I thank everyone who contributed to making this event possible.”

Manav: “Museums Are Bridges from the Past to the Future”

International Museology Association President Derya Manav highlighted İzmir’s significant strides in the field of museology:

“Museums today are not just places that narrate the past—they are spaces that shape the future. Through this workshop held in partnership with Bornova Municipality, we aimed to foster collective strength. We thank the municipality for their contribution and hospitality.”

Manav also announced that the knowledge and insights generated during the workshop would be published on digital platforms to ensure accessibility for researchers and professionals.
