5 May 2025

"Our Greatest Strength in Combating the Climate Crisis Is the Youth"

Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki participated in an energy efficiency and electrification training session at Yaşar University as part of the STORMLOG Project, emphasizing the vital role of young engineering students in the fight against climate change. During the training, Mayor Eşki shared technical insights on sustainable energy systems and invited the youth to become conscious participants in the process by sharing his experiences.

University-Municipality Collaboration through the STORMLOG Project

As part of the STORMLOG Project—funded by the European Union and the Republic of Turkey and carried out by Bornova Municipality in partnership with Yaşar University and Energy Cities—an important training session was organized for young engineering students. Within the scope of the project titled “Sustainable Transport and Water Management in Local Government Services,” first-year students of Energy Systems Engineering at Yaşar University were educated on energy efficiency and electrification.

Mayor Eşki: "The Cities of the Future Need Conscious Citizens"

Speaking at the training, Mayor Ömer Eşki provided information about the municipality’s efforts in combating climate change. Emphasizing that a vision for a sustainable city requires not only physical investments but also conscious individuals, Eşki said, “The energy systems of the future will be shaped by the aware youth of today. A generation that works, produces, questions, and takes responsibility will be our strongest pillar in the fight for climate justice. As Bornova Municipality, we are proud to walk alongside the youth.”

Prof. Dr. Kamil Okyay Sındır Also Attended

The session was also attended by Prof. Dr. Kamil Okyay Sındır, a former secretary-general of CHP, member of parliament in the 25th, 26th, and 27th terms, and a former mayor of Bornova. During his mayoral term (2009–2014), Sındır also served as Vice President of Energy Cities, a Political Committee Member of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions, and a member of the National Photovoltaic Power Systems Platform.

Focus on Energy Efficiency

The training was conducted by Dr. Emrah Bıyık from the Department of Energy Systems Engineering at Yaşar University. Topics covered included the importance of energy efficiency, the impact of individual behavior on energy consumption, the strategic role of electrification in combating climate change, and the necessity of transitioning to sustainable systems.
