A Life-Saving Touch in Bornova

12 October 2026

A First Aid Initiative for Children

Bornova Municipality’s Health Affairs Directorate has launched a vital training program to ensure the safety of children, our future. During the comprehensive first aid training held at the Multi-Purpose Hall of Uğur Mumcu Culture and Arts Center, participants received practical instruction on critical life-saving interventions in sudden emergencies.

The Right Intervention Saves Lives

The well-attended training emphasized the importance of timely intervention in potential hazards that young children may encounter, particularly in nurseries and at home. Experts highlighted that children often have difficulty recognizing dangers and stressed the importance of remaining calm and acting knowledgeably in emergencies such as falls, airway obstructions, burns, poisoning, and allergic reactions.

Instructors working at Bornova Municipality’s Children’s Play and Activity Centers were also informed about the vital details that must be communicated when calling the 112 Emergency Call Center, including the full address, the nature of the incident, the child’s age, and their level of consciousness.

Life-Saving Warnings and Practical Training from Experts

Emergency Medical Technicians Ali Osman Çatal and Tuncay Elçi, who conducted the training, demonstrated Basic Life Support (BLS) techniques for children and infants, as well as the Heimlich maneuver for airway obstructions, using training mannequins.

The trainers also addressed common mistakes, explaining that misguided practices based on hearsay—such as putting objects into the mouth of a child having a seizure, tilting the head backward during a nosebleed, or applying yogurt or toothpaste to burns—can hinder recovery and even worsen the situation.

Mayor Eşki: “First Aid Awareness Will Reach Every Resident of Bornova”

Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki stated that the municipality aims to promote a culture of health and safety throughout the district.

“The health and safety of our children are our highest priorities. We want our staff working in our nurseries and social facilities, as well as parents, to be fully equipped with first aid knowledge. A correct, medication-free intervention before medical teams arrive can help save a child’s life.

As Bornova Municipality, we will remain committed to extending these training programs to every corner of our district and building a well-informed society.”
