“Green Future” Training for Teachers in Bornova

9 November 2025

Bornova Municipality organized a special “Waste Management and Climate Change” training program for teachers working in its Children’s Play and Activity Centers, aiming to instill environmental awareness from an early age. The training covered recycling, zero-waste practices, and compost production. Mayor Ömer Eşki emphasized that fostering environmental awareness in children is “the most valuable investment for the future.”

The program, jointly organized by the Bornova Municipality Directorate of Climate Change and Zero Waste and the Directorate of Women and Family Services, took place at the Altındağ Atatürk Cultural Center NGO Complex.

The Role of Cities in Climate Change

In the second part of the training, Serdar Karaduman, an urban planner and Board Member of Kent-Lab Association, delivered a presentation on the role of cities in climate change, mitigation and adaptation actions, and Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP) processes.

Teachers received information on:

  • Proper waste separation methods,

  • The environmental and economic benefits of recycling,

  • Zero-waste practices applicable in school settings,

  • The impacts of climate change on human life.

Hands-On Compost Workshop

At the end of the session, teachers were guided on how to integrate environmental education into classroom activities to help children develop sustainable lifestyle habits. A practical composting workshop was held, demonstrating the production of organic solid compost and liquid fertilizer, and showcasing how kitchen and garden waste can be brought back into the circular economy.

Compost fertilizers produced at the Bornova Municipality Waste Collection Center were gifted to teachers at the conclusion of the program.

Mayor Eşki: “The most valuable investment for the future is environmental awareness”

Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki highlighted the long-term impact of early environmental education, stating:

“The children of today are the decision-makers of tomorrow. That’s why empowering our teachers to instill environmental awareness in children is the most valuable investment we can make for the future. We will continue expanding such programs to spread a culture of sustainability across Bornova. Through our waste management initiatives, we are protecting both nature and the economy.”

Bornova Municipality plans to expand similar training programs to reach a wider audience in schools and institutions across the city in the coming period.
