Mayor Eşki: “We are working day and night, including weekends”

Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki announced that the roads dug up after İZSU’s infrastructure works will be resurfaced with asphalt and opened to traffic by Monday, September 8, when schools reopen. He emphasized that permanent solutions are being implemented on Mustafa Kemal and Fevzi Çakmak Avenues with sidewalks, medians, lighting, and landscaping arrangements, eliminating flooding problems as well. Stating that teams are working day and night, Mayor Eşki thanked the Directorate of Public Works and the municipal police staff.

“Our goal is dust-free, asphalted roads”

Mayor Ömer Eşki inspected the ongoing municipal works to restore the roads dug up for İZSU’s infrastructure projects. Speaking about the works on Mustafa Kemal Avenue and Fevzi Çakmak Avenue, he said:

“The work has been ongoing for days. Schools will open on Monday morning, so our teams will continue working until then. Our primary goal is to ensure that the dug-up roads are dust-free by Monday morning, that at least the first layer of asphalt is laid, and that as many sidewalks as possible are completed. Many of you ask why the manhole covers are higher. That’s because we usually lay two layers of asphalt. First, we lay the base layer to adjust the surface, and then we align it with the manholes in the second layer.”

“We are solving Bornova’s permanent problems”

Highlighting that the works also provide permanent solutions, Mayor Eşki said:

“By Monday morning, we will lay the first layer of asphalt on Mustafa Kemal Avenue and Fevzi Çakmak Avenue, which is still under excavation, and open them to traffic. Afterwards, we will continue working at night to lay the second layer, making the roads fully usable. We also aimed to meet other needs here. For example, instead of paving stones on the sidewalks that frequently shifted, we poured concrete. We carried out landscaping in certain areas. While preserving pedestrian pathways, we created café spaces where residents can sit at their doorsteps. We removed unsightly construction rods that used to stand in the middle of the street and replaced them with a neat median and modern lighting system. We are building streets that make Bornova more attractive in every sense—streets with strong infrastructure where citizens enjoy walking. At this point, I would like to thank our Metropolitan Municipality and İZSU for their support on infrastructure works.”

“Flooding and road problems will be history”

Mayor Eşki stated that the long-standing flooding problems in Bornova will also be resolved through these works:

“In Sekiz Sokak, Mustafa Kemal Avenue, and Fevzi Çakmak Avenue, flooding issues and problems such as pedestrians getting wet while crossing the street will no longer exist. Starting Sunday night, all our teams will be in the field. By Monday morning, we will have asphalted almost all of the dug-up areas. I sincerely thank all our colleagues for their efforts in advance.”

Mayor Eşki also noted that, in addition to Public Works teams, municipal police officers contributed by regulating traffic during the works, adding: “During Municipal Police Week, they are here with us. Best wishes to all Bornova residents.”
