Abandoned Area Surrounding the 166-Year-Old Paterson Mansion Has Been Cleared

The area in front of the 166-year-old Paterson Mansion in Bornova became neglected and posed a fire risk after being closed off during restoration works. In response to residents’ concerns, Bornova Municipality intervened and cleaned the area, which is under the ownership of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, making it safe again. Mayor Ömer Eşki explained the municipality's action with the statement: “Regardless of ownership, if there is a problem, we are there.”

Located within a 133-decare plot, the iconic Paterson Mansion is one of Bornova’s most prominent landmarks. As part of ongoing restoration efforts, the mansion's surroundings were fenced off, leading the area in front of the Bornova Central Covered Market to fall into disuse and neglect.

Most residents were unaware of which institution was responsible for the site. Over time, it became a haven for stray cats, a dumping ground for garbage, and a patch of dry brush—posing a high fire risk. A small fire recently broke out in the area. Responding to local requests, Bornova Municipality cleaned the area known by locals as the “Cat Park,” eliminating the hazard.

Fire Risk Eliminated, Area Thoroughly Cleaned

Bornova Municipality teams removed accumulated waste, dry weeds, and branches that increased fire risk. Measures were also taken to ensure the safety of the stray animals that had made the area their home.

Mayor Eşki: “If there’s a problem, we’re there—regardless of who owns the land”

Mayor Ömer Eşki emphasized their commitment to public well-being, stating:
“This area surrounding the historical Paterson Mansion may officially belong to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, but any request from our fellow Bornova residents is important to us. We couldn’t just ignore a site that had become hazardous and unsanitary. Every inch of Bornova is our responsibility.”
